Instagram's Edits video editor now on desktop as Mac app

Meta announced that Instagram's video editing app Edits is now available as a desktop application for Mac computers. The move lets creators work on more ambitious projects that may not suit the mobile version, the company said. The desktop version mirrors the phone app's layout, allowing multiple clips, audio tracks, visual effects and music from its library. It benefits from the larger screen to provide fine‑tuned control that is harder on a phone.

"Our new desktop editor brings a full multi-track timeline, keyframes for dynamic transitions, and precise audio waveforms for beat-accurate cuts," Meta explains in a blog post. "Splitting, cutting, and trimming are all easier, and color wheels, log conversions, and curves give your videos a finished grade." The app also supports dedicated keyboard shortcuts and custom fonts. Users can still export videos without a watermark and publish directly to Instagram without leaving the app.
Meta first released Edits early last year to challenge ByteDance's CapCut, which remains popular among TikTok creators. During its latest earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Edits now has more than 50 million active users. The company said it is working on further desktop features, including the ability to switch between desktop and mobile while editing the same project.
