The event took place despite a ceasefire that came into force in October last year, with Israeli air strikes continuing almost daily. The Gaza war began after a Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 that left about 1,200 people dead and 251 taken hostage, and Israel’s subsequent military campaign has killed more than 74,640 people, according to the Gaza health ministry. Organisers described the ceremony as a celebration of love and new beginnings in the besieged enclave.
