Documentary on BioWare to be released next year

A documentary called Massive Effect: The BioWare Story is being produced about the closure of BioWare, and is slated to be released next year, Deadline reported. The film follows the studio’s final act after Electronic Arts shut down the storied developer last month. Filming began two years before the shutdown. BioWare was closed after its recent games failed to meet EA’s sales expectations.

Canada’s Super Channel commissioned the project, which will trace the 31‑year history of BioWare. Producer Shane Fennessey said in a statement on X that the film will tell “the story of how a group of underdogs from the Alberta prairies built one of the most beloved studios in gaming, told by the people who were there,” and added “Now, with the shocking news of the studio's closure, we carry the responsibility of telling how the story ends.” The documentary will feature founders Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip, as well as director Casey Hudson, voice actor Jennifer Hale, former EA chief John Riccitiello and other developers.
Fans can contribute memories through a website set up by the production team, sharing photos, videos, cosplay and fan art. Some supporters have also petitioned the Canadian government to assist former BioWare staff in buying the studio. Bloomberg reported that EA, now mainly owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, redirected resources from the unfinished Mass Effect 5 to the unrevealed Star Wars Battlefront 3.
