Salon announced today in an unsigned post that it will cease publishing after 31 years, describing the “business realities of independent digital journalism” as having changed profoundly and its model as no longer sustainable. The company did not provide further details, though it noted industry challenges such as “Google Zero” and AI tools. When approached for comment, Salon general manager Amanda Wolfe referred The Verge to the announcement post.

Salon’s post read: “Thirty-one years is a remarkable run, but what matters most is what happened during those years: the journalism, the ideas, the voices, the conversations and the community that grew around them,” and added, “Salon helped demonstrate what digital journalism could be and could become. We hope that legacy will continue to matter long after today.” On Bluesky, chief content officer Erin Keane said the editorial archive will “stay live for now.” Current owner Find.co, which bought Salon in 2023, describes itself as a “Performance Marketing Ecosystem transforming crypto marketing with performance and precision.”
