Weather conditions in Newcastle worsened significantly during the second half, with Tonga struggling against severe wind and rain. Head coach Kristian Woolf acknowledged that his side "didn't handle the conditions as well as they did" but refused to use the weather as an excuse for the loss.
According to reports, Tonga remained unbeaten throughout the group stage but struggled with attacking direction and poor decision-making during the match. The team also appeared vulnerable when defending the bouncing ball, with Woolf noting, "It was a disappointing way to finish. Whoever was against the wind in the second half was going to find it tough and we just had to handle it better."
Woolf described the defeat as a missed opportunity given the talent within the group. Reflecting on the team's progress, he stated, "Once upon a time, we were just happy to be in the finals and be competitive. Now, we see ourselves as real players and believe we can win it."
Despite the loss in only their second semi-final appearance, the coach expressed optimism for the future. Woolf concluded, "We thought we could do that tonight. We certainly think we've got a team that is capable of doing that. Tongan rugby league can be really confident going forward."
