Non-league side targets another upset

Altrincham boss Neil Gibson is hoping to echo the club's famous giant‑killing by taking on Notts County in an FA Cup tie that will be shown live on BBC TV in front of a large crowd at Moss Lane.

The original shock came in 1986 when Altrincham eliminated First Division Birmingham City at St Andrews, becoming only the second of four non‑league sides to beat top‑flight opposition away from home.
The Welshman joined the club last year to steer it clear of relegation and has guided the team into play‑off contention in the National League, with a first promotion to the English Football League now the main ambition.
"It would mean a lot. It's the spirit and essence of this club," he says. "We have a real opportunity. They are a very good team, but it's a game where we feel that we can go and etch our own memories. All the fans remember those cup moments from the past and we want to try and replicate that."
Gibson noted that Altrincham lies only a few miles from Old Trafford in Greater Manchester, an area dominated by United and City fans, and that the club, which turned professional just four years ago, must work hard to keep its supporter base. "A lot of our players are good enough to play at a higher level, and it's a chance to showcase themselves and test ourselves against a club that three years ago were in the same league as us," says Gibson.

The current squad features five former Notts County players, and Gibson himself brings cup experience, having helped Southport defeat Notts County 24 years ago, playing for Tranmere in the 2000 League Cup final and winning the Welsh Cup three times, twice as a manager.
"Cups have always been very special to me," he says. "We're really excited about it and we're going to give it absolutely everything. But you only remember these days if you come out on the right side of the result."
