Rory McIlroy surged into contention at the Abu Dhabi Championship on Friday, carding a nine-under-par 63 to sit just one shot off the lead. The 37-year-old recorded 11 birdies during his second round, recovering from a two-shot penalty incurred on Thursday to reach 11 under par overall.

The tournament is currently led by Spain's Jon Rahm, England's Tyrell Hatton and Italy's Francesco Laporta, who all share the top spot at 12 under. McIlroy is tied for fourth place alongside English golfers Sam Bairstow and Matthew Jordan, as well as Poland's Adrian Meronk.
Laporta, who entered the second round with a lead of 10 under, was caught by Rahm and Hatton after they produced superior scores on Friday. McIlroy's penalty on the opening day, which left him eight shots off the pace at two under, resulted from him improving his lie during a chip on the par-four 12th at Yas Links. The six-time major winner was sanctioned after pressing down on the grass behind his ball with his club, officials confirmed.
