Lee Westwood concerned for future of DP World Tour

Lee Westwood has raised concerns regarding the long-term stability of the DP World Tour following shifts in the global golf landscape. The golfer noted that while LIV players previously held leverage by competing in certain DP World Tour events, that influence has diminished significantly.

The PGA Tour and the European tour extended their strategic alliance in July, a deal that includes Annual Investment Payments which reached £59m last year. Under current terms, the top 10 finishers on the DP World Tour who are not already members receive PGA Tour cards. However, Westwood suggested that the financial dependence on the PGA Tour may lead to significant demands from the American organisation.
Westwood remarked: "If [the DP World Tour] want to continue having the PGA Tour bankrolling them, there are going to be some big asks from the PGA Tour." He added: "If I was [chief executive] Brian Rolapp running the PGA Tour, I would be playing hardball and making a lot of demands of the European tour if they expected me to finance it going forward."
A DP World Tour spokesperson stated that the organisation remains in "a robust and healthy position with strong cash reserves." The representative noted that their progress is notable given the "havoc in the global golf market" caused by unsustainable economic models. They added that the tour looks forward to the 2027 season and beyond, citing strong player interest.
Westwood, who is currently "unemployed" as he weighs his future, would face a 10-tournament suspension if he returned to the DP World Tour. He expressed worry over the lack of announced prize funds for next year and the prominence of the Korn Ferry Tour in the PGA Tour's future plans. "The PGA Tour put this 'plan for the future' in place and the DP World Tour is not mentioned a whole lot in that," Westwood said.

The PGA Tour has outlined a new structure featuring a Championship Series and a Challenger Series. While some Championship Series events will be co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour, prize funds remain largely unconfirmed for the 2027 calendar outside of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January. Westwood concluded that there are "a lot of questions still to be answered" regarding the strategic alliance.
