Many migratory species such as trout and salmon travel up smaller tributaries to spawn in cleaner, gravel‑bottomed or cooler waters, away from larger predators in the main river. A tributary is a smaller river that flows into a larger mainstem river where these fish swim up to lay their eggs away from larger predators in the main river.
Inler Angling Club Chairperson David Pyper said: "For those who dedicate so much time and effort to caring for the river, witnessing the sheer loss of fish in circumstances such as these is particularly disappointing. The club hopes that the forthcoming investigations will establish the cause of this latest incident and help ensure appropriate steps are taken to protect the river and its wildlife."
The club has urged local representatives and authorities to continue prioritising rivers and to allocate resources toward improving water quality and preventing further incidents.
