First‑ and second‑floor units were engulfed in flames when crews arrived. Four victims were declared dead at the scene, and a man and a woman later died in hospital, the NYPD said. Six civilians, two of them critically, and three firefighters were also injured, FDNY reported. A hazardous‑materials team was called because a lithium‑ion battery was found on site, though its role in the fire remains unclear, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he was "heartbroken" and urged New Yorkers to "take a moment to pray for the full recovery of those who were injured".
