Election officials announced on Thursday that Democratic socialist Nithya Raman has unseated incumbent Karen Bass in the Los Angeles mayoral contest.

Raman entered the race as a long‑shot against Bass, a former congresswoman who had never previously lost a political contest, analysts said. Observers noted that her victory surprised many California political watchers. She has frequently been likened to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, both being democratic socialists with progressive platforms. The result means that the United States’ two largest cities will now be led by democratic socialists, a group that includes figures such as Mamdani and Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez, according to political commentators.
Bass, also a Democrat, posted a concession message on social media on Thursday, writing, "while this is not the outcome we hoped for, the people of Los Angeles have spoken." She added, "Moving this city forward is what Los Angeles needs from all of us. I love Los Angeles. I believe in Los Angeles. And I will continue to ensure the promise of a better life belongs to all of us."
Raman, a city‑council member and Indian immigrant, ran on a platform promising to overhaul what she described as a "broken status quo and the politicians who failed them over and over again". Her campaign pledged to reduce homelessness, expand housing, safeguard Hollywood jobs, and shield residents from immigration‑enforcement actions. She also pledged to improve city beautification, repair roads and revive the nightlife scene, according to her campaign literature.
The 2025 Los Angeles fires, which killed dozens of people and razed neighbourhoods, dominated the campaign, observers noted. Bass faced intense political fallout over her absence during the emergency and the city’s response to the disaster, campaign analysts said.

The incoming mayor will preside over the city as it hosts the Super Bowl in 2027 and the Summer Olympics in 2028, officials confirmed.
