Employment lawyer warns illegal interview questions and bias
Business Desk
Employment lawyer Roy Magara warned that asking women about plans to have children and telling older candidates they do not fit a younger team are illegal forms of discrimination. He said such questions breach the law that protects age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage, pregnancy, race, religion, sex and sexual orientation.

Magara advised anyone who suspects bias to submit a subject access request, external to see how the company discussed the application internally. He noted that worst‑case scenarios can make interviews feel especially difficult given the control employers have over candidates.
Euan Cameron, co‑founder of hiring software Willo, said that despite the power imbalance, candidates should not overthink interviews. He said: "An interview is just a conversation between two people," and added, "Of course, as in Tiara's case, it helps when both of those people show up."
